We came to know what a sentence is and different types of parts of a sentence. Sentences are mainly used for expression. There are several ways in which we can differentiate sentences. Functions that are performed by sentences are one of the several ways to differentiate the sentences. So let us know the main functions of sentences.
- Declarative sentences
- Exclamatory sentences
- Interrogative sentences
- Imperative sentences
- Declarative sentences: These sentences are useful for stating an idea. They are generally facts or some statements.
E.g. Carrots are rich in Vitamin A.
We eat food for getting energy.
- Exclamatory sentences: These sentences are useful for expressing some strong emotions which we feel when we have some surprise news which may good or bad news.
E.g. Alas! The old man died.
Hurray! India won the match.
- Interrogative sentences: These sentences are useful for asking questions. When we want to ask someone about something then we use this kind of sentence function. These sentences always end with question mark.
E.g. What’s the time now?
Where are you going?
Did you put the glass there?
- Imperative sentences: These sentences are useful for expressing the command or order or directing someone. These usually end with exclamatory mark. They usually doesn’t have any subject as it is a command.
E.g. Shut your mouth!
Move right and go straight.
