When­ever we speak or write we are seek­ing to com­mu­ni­cate with oth­ers or with a group of peo­ple. It is essen­tial to think care­fully about the needs and sit­u­a­tion of that peo­ple when we are select­ing the words that we are using. Oth­er­wise we need to face so many dif­fi­cul­ties. To achieve good com­mu­ni­ca­tion we need to remem­ber two things in our mind that how well can they under­stand the lan­guage and how much do they know about the subject.

A good way to under­stand clearly what is involved is to com­pare the sub­ject writ­ten for dif­fer­ent peo­ple like the sen­tences may be sim­ple and easy to under­stand and very short or the sen­tences may be long and the vocab­u­lary is more demand­ing or sen­tences may be longer and more com­plex with vocab­u­lary, dif­fi­cult gram­mar and writ­ten intel­lec­tu­ally. So the read­abil­ity depends up on the three fac­tors like length, com­plex­ity and vocab­u­lary. But gen­er­ally speak­ing and writ­ing dif­fer with many points but most of them apply to both. So these fac­tors affect the way oth­ers under­stand the lan­guage we speak.

Effec­tive com­mu­ni­ca­tion not only means how well the audi­ence can under­stand our lan­guage but also how well they know about the sub­ject. Dif­fer­ent read­ers will have dif­fer­ent lev­els of knowl­edge to read a text. With knowl­edge comes the vocab­u­lary to express it. So if we are hav­ing so much vocab­u­lary we are sure that we can have bet­ter knowl­edge than oth­ers. It is because we will get more vocab­u­lary only when we read so much on that topic or sub­ject. As we become more skilled and more expe­ri­enced, we gain more knowl­edge about that topic or in that field. When we are writ­ing tech­ni­cal papers then we need to first decide for whom we are writ­ing the arti­cle or paper and what is the level of under­stand­ing we are expect­ing from them. If we write a tech­ni­cal paper in a news paper, peo­ple who do gen­eral works and read news paper for gen­eral news can’t under­stand any­thing. If we need to use the words that may be unfa­mil­iar, then try to give an expla­na­tion of the words and their mean­ing in an eas­ily under­stand­able lan­guage. At the same time we should not patron­ize the peo­ple by using the words that they will find babyish.
