English grammar

Sometimes it is funny how people tend to create sentences with their own book of grammar. Knowing the basic rules of grammar is essential for proper framing of sentences both, while reading as well as writing. Being aware of all the know-how of grammar, one can speak fluent English and write properly framed sentences with ease.

Types of Grammar

There are two branches of grammar-descriptive and prescriptive. Both the types are used broadly in day to day life. While numerous linguists prefer to go with the former, those who teach English tend to go for the latter. On a bigger note, descriptive grammar accepts the grammar of any language the way it is. On the other hand, prescriptive grammar has its own strict set of rules that every part of speech shall abide by so as to be termed as grammatically correct. It is important to have a broad knowledge of both the type to be able to speak and writer proper English.

How to Write Poetry? (Part II)

In the previous post, we looked at various ways to get started with poetry. We looked at expressing our feelings, our senses effectively. Now we would look at few things which can prove to be extremely important.

Read Poetry:

Reading poetry is considered one of the vital ingredients to writing poetry. It not only gives you the strength of vocabulary but also it gives you the strength of powerful imagery. Using metaphors effectively is one of the parameters which distinguish a good poem from a normal one. Initially when you read great work you tend to get overpowered by their style and their words. Sometimes you would tend to lend their style. Watch out against this. Remember they too must have started from square one. It’s their gift of vision that separated them from others. Let me remind you again that having an absolutely first class, original vision help when it comes to words.

Walk away from drudgery:

Walk Away From Drudgery

You need to allow yourself time and space to come up with ideas. Until you lie down in a sofa and allow yourself a reverie you would not appreciate all your feelings. Each of our senses lives the same feeling differently. So if you don’t give time to yourself to indulge with the idea of a spectacular thought, you don’t fully live that moment. You need to move from the present realm of chores and tensions to the world of a beautiful thought. The moment you live each moment fully, you are ready to write poems which everyone else would die to read. Remember the sole idea of poetry is to lift you from your present world and get you to a world of you and yourself.

Write and Share:

Start writing! Start with few words which you already mocked up in your mind. Sometimes the poems are not finished in one sitting, but keeping it for long would also diminish the fluidity of the thought. Choosing a topic close to your heart shall help. If the topic is a pain staking experience then you can use third person tone to bring about the pain. Do not hesitate to take opinion of others. Remember they always want to hear about someone’s experience which is different from them. All the opinion is constructive. After the entire step to further heights stops at all positives.

Happy Poetry!

Structure your Essays

Written communication is taking precedence over verbal communication, at least in business paradigm. Written communication removes the element of doubt. Written communication is about being precise and expressing concisely. Many of us fail to present our views well enough to engage the audience.  As a result, we lose on grades and opportunities. Elegance and flair in writing is developed by continuous practice. Through the next few articles we will learn to develop the habit of writing systematically with a focus on elegance on top of information.

Golden Rule

C.O.D.E.R. This will be our mantra to have an eye catching essay.

C: Collect Ideas

O: Organize Ideas

D: Draft the ideas

E: Edit the initial draft

R: Rewrite and jump to D.

If you feel, your essay passes all tests then it is ready to be submitted.

How to make requests in English language?

In our daily life we come across many situations where we have to make a request or a command. There are different levels of politeness in making a request. You have to know them because they will help others to understand what you want to convey. Otherwise, there is a probability of taking your request as a command. The following are some of the ways how you can request something in English.

  1. Give me some money.
  2. Will you lend me some money, (please)?
  3. Can you lend me some money, (please)?
  4. Could you lend me some money?
  5. Do you think you could lend me some money?
  6. I wonder if you could lend me some money.
  7. Would you mind lending me some money?
  8. If you could lend me some money, I’d be very grateful/I’d appreciate it.
lend money

Make requests — Can you please lend me some money?

In the above list, the (1) is the least polite way of making a request and (8) is the most polite. They are arranged in the ascending order of politeness. The last form (8) is mostly used in writing not generally not used in speaking.

It is important to understand that using the proper degree of politeness is very important in the English language otherwise it sounds awkward. For example, if you say ‘would you mind fetching me some water?’ to your servant, it looks odd and he/she will be surprised. Also, when you want to ask something (pen for example) from a stranger don’t say ‘Will you lend me your pen?’ as it will sound the rudeness and he will understand it as a command instead of a request. Hence, before you ask something, identify the closeness of the person with you and make the request in correct form.
